St. Julian's House
St.Julian's House takes homeless local men and women - usually up to 16 residents, with a maximum of 32. The majority of people accommodated here cannot cope with day-to-day living in the community, some having neglected themselves for years before moving to St.Julian's.
Others are here because of family break-up, with older men in particular often unable to cope when a partner dies or a long-term relationship breaks down. They need a home and stability until they can come to terms with their change of circumstances.
It is not unusual for people who have caused problems at home to be rejected by their entire family. Many of these turn to St.Julian's - the nearest thing we have to a refuge for men.
We hear much about the needs of battered women, but very little about those of battered men. The problem is more common than people realise - and these men are just as much in need of a place of shelter and security until their problems can be resolved.
For many of the longer term residents, St Julian's becomes their home, offering respite and some rehabilitation. In other cases, it acts as emergency accommodation. We currently have 14 staff, providing 24/7 cover.
