La Corbinerie
a better quality of life
Investment within Guernsey’s health service is high and this is clearly demonstrated in the new facilities for the care of older people suffering from mental health problems. These services relocated in August 2004 to La Corbinerie, adjacent to the Princess Elizabeth Hospital, where three 20-bedded, purpose-built units - Fougère, Casquets and Hanois - are specifically equipped to care for older people suffering non-acute mental health problems.
This move hugely improved the quality of daily life for patients and staff alike. Each unit has twenty single rooms featuring ensuite facilities with overhead hoisting equipment and the most up-to-date nurse call system. Rooms may be personalised with the patient’s own photos and possessions.
There are large lounge areas which are light bright and airy, a garden and dining area - all linked to allow patients to move around the wards in what is described as a ‘wandering loop’. A separate kitchen and a sensory room contained within each unit allow patients to continue many activities of daily living. Relatives are welcome to visit at any time and encouraged to play an active role in the care of their loved one.
The environment is open and relaxed, with teams of friendly and professional nurses working hard to deliver high standards of care and applying the very latest techniques in elderly mental health nursing.
