Acute inpatient care for children and young people is provided on Frossard Ward at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital which accepts planned or emergency admissions of the under 16s from across the Bailiwick (Guernsey, Alderney, Sark and Herm).

It is a 12-bedded general medical and surgical paediatric unit (3 of which are designated adolescent comprising its own sitting room TV, DVD’s, play-station and en-suite facilities), plus three special-care cots.The ward also has a playroom well equipped with toys, books and games.

Care is provided by a multidisciplinary team made up of three consultant paediatricians - specialising in neurology, endocrinology and neonatology - plus a range of paediatric specialists, therapists and nurses. Parents are actively encouraged to participate in their child’s care and families are also supported by a children’s community nurse who provides outreach and home care services.

Nursing staff wear a more casual uniform of tee-shirts and trousers and run a preadmission Saturday club to familiarise the child with the hospital environment and help allay any fears.

The range of activities undertaken by our nursing staff includes play activities, special communications (Makaton), preparation for surgery and community liaison,Outpatient clinics (Cardiac) and Neonatal Outreach Service. We also attend the Accident and Emergency department when required for paediatric casualties and liase with support and co-ordinate the care of any child admitted to Critical Care Unit.
