Handling a wide range of clinical specialities, this multi-purpose unit at the Princess Elizabeth hospital is made up of a day-patient area with 22 trolley beds, a minor operating theatre and an endoscopy suite.

Around 30% of day patients attend for an investigation or procedure, in an area such as gynaecology, urology, orthopaedics, ophthalmic or ENT. Most of these have their operation performed in the hospital’s main theatre suite.

The remaining 70% undergo a procedure within the day unit, whether it involves dental work, endoscopy or minor surgery. We also run various clinics - including pain control, urodynamics and colostomy.

The unit is open Monday to Friday and sees an average of 20-40 patients a day, both adults and children. Nursing staff here gain a wide spread of clinical experience and have every opportunity to further develop their careers.

To this end, we work hard to create a relaxed and comfortable environment, to monitor the quality of service we provide and to ensure patients have the knowledge and support needed to return home safely and confidently.
