Continuing Care of the Elderly

Holisitic and optimistic

Effective care of older adults begins with the bigger picture - with a commitment to fully understanding each individual’s particular care needs. By taking a holistic approach and encouraging wider participation, we aim to deliver real improvement in the quality of people’s lives.

Our vision is one of person-centred, proactive and seamless services delivered by skilled and committed staff - offering choice, empowerment and social inclusion to all service users. We are progressively introducing Essence of Care.

At the King Edward VII hospital, there are three continuing care wards which provides continuing therapy and rehabilitation treatment for around 20 patients a day and St Lukes a separate day centre which provides social and respite care for up to 10 patients, Monday to Friday.

The wards are mixed-sex and provide a range of single rooms, plus 2, 3, 4 and 5-bedded areas. All beds have an overhead hoist - or the use of a mobile hoist - as we operate a non-lifting policy.

Patients enjoy access to an activities team, whose work helps with the social aspects of their care. There is an onsite chapel; and organised activities include outings and day-trips, painting workshops etc. Our open environment encourages patients’ friends and family to have as much input into the care experience as they wish.

Situated at Princess Elizabeth Hospital site, the Duchess of Kent House is a 36-bedded residential unit for people experiencing Dementia. It offers residents person-centred care, focusing on respect for the individual and involving them in decisions that impact on their lives.

As well as creating a positive social and spiritual environment in which the person can experience well-being, staff organise a full Activities programme - with dedicated carers provided both group activities and one-to-one sessions. We have a Snoezelen room, sensory garden and our own mini-bus for outings.

The home has an excellent team of carers - mostly NVQ-qualified or working towards it - who are committed to delivering a high standard of dementia care.

For older people suffering mental health problems, our new site at La Corbinerie provides three 20-single room, purpose-built units with state-of-the art equipment and outstanding facilities, including large lounge areas, a garden and dining area - all linked to allow patients to move around the wards independantly in what is described as a ‘wandering loop’.Our patients also benefit from the input of our Activities team who organise group and individual activities, events and regular social outings.
