Assessment and Rehabilitation

Short-term and long-term

Named after a former president of Guernsey’s Department of Health, the Allan Grut Ward at the King Edward VII hospital is a 24-bed male and female rehabilitation ward, providing round-the-clock care to a client group predominantly aged over 55.

Admissions to the ward are mainly from acute services, from surgical/medical wards and from the Day Assessment unit.

The Day Assessment unit is a nurse-led, multi-disciplinary service which provides continuing therapy and rehabilitation treatment. Specific developments within the unit include a Falls Clinic with a Balance Group, as well as a Parkinson’s Disease Clinic run by a specialist nurse.

At the Princess Elizabeth hospital, Sherwill ward is an 8-bed stroke unit staffed by a specialist team. The length of stay here is determined by the severity of the stroke; patients ready for intensive rehabilitation are usually transferred to the Allan Grut ward.

All teams include qualified professionals with expertise in the field of rehabilitation. Nurses aim to work in partnership with other disciplines including a team of specialist and consultant nurses who also work across acute and community services, including diabetes, continence, elderly mental health, pain management, osteoporosis, tissue viability and stroke management to help patients regain their independence after an acute surgical or medical intervention - enabling them to adapt sufficiently to return home with confidence.
