FAQ’s

Please see the below frequently asked questions and answers. If your question is not answered below please email us your query and we will try our best to answer it.

Can I bring my car to Guernsey?
Yes, although you will need to re-register it on arrival.

The job I am applying for is on a 5 year contract - can this be extended?
No, 5 years is the length of the Housing Licence that has been attached to the job. You can only remain in the job for the duration of the Housing Licence.

Can I buy a house in Guernsey if I take up a Housing Licence?
Yes you can, you can buy any one bedroomed property without restrictions. If you want to buy anything bigger than this then you will be set a minimum Tax on Real Property (TRP) by the Housing Department which is linked to your salary and you need to buy a property with a TRP at that level or higher. The TRP is set by the Cadastre Department, is based on the size of plan view of the property and determines the rate of payment for refuse collection, street lighting and other local services. For example a nurse on Band 6 would be set a TRP of between £80+ and £85+ depending where on the pay scale they were appointed. A house with an TRP of £85 would pay annual rates of £45.90.

If I rent will I be set a TRP?
Yes, the same rules apply to renting property.

Can my family relocate with me?
Yes they can as long as they live with you and you remain in the job that has the Housing Licence attached to it. Older children cannot rent or buy property independently.

Will my partner be able to take up employment?
Yes he or she will be given a Declaration of Lawful Residence which means that employment can be obtained.

How do we choose a school for our 8 year old?
Primary schooling is split into catchment areas so the school your child goes to depends on which Parish you will be living in.

And what about when he is ready for Secondary School?
The 11+ is still operated in Guernsey although parents now have a choice about whether their child sits the exam or not. For those that do they may gain a place at either Elizabeth College for boys, Ladies College for girls or the co-ed Grammar School. For those who do not achieve a place at these schools or do not sit the exam a place will be allocated at one of the secondary schools, again dependant on catchment area.
