Pharmacy

Informed and integral

Closely involved in the delivery of care, the Pharmacy service is seen very much as an integral part of the clinical team. Situated at the Princess Elizabeth site - with a satellite office at the Castel hospital - it is a modern and well-equipped department, offering a range of services to rival those at most UK hospitals.

The dispensary supports in-patient services and the busy psychiatric outpatient clinics. Our team of pharmacists serve all wards - daily at Princess Elizabeth and 2-3 times a week elsewhere. A Medicines Information service, linked to Southampton General hospital, provides a huge range of electronic and paper source material.

The team also provides a rostered on-call service outside normal hours, plus technical services including aseptically prepared products for use in such areas as PN (adult and paediatric), chemotherapy, MAB and radiopharmaceuticals.

The department is staffed by a friendly team of around 20, among them 7 pharmacists and 5 technicians. Extensive training is available and includes support for an MSc in Clinical Pharmacy (University of Belfast), pre-registration training and supplementary prescribing.

Most staff will also have the opportunity to attend a major pharmacy conference - helping them maintain their clinical knowledge and develop new skills, whilst remaining part of the hospital pharmacy community.
